About AM General

AM General is an American manufacturer of military and specialty vehicles based in South Bend, Indiana. American Motors organized it as a wholly owned subsidiary in 1971, using the former Kaiser-Jeep General Products Division.1

Its best-known vehicle is the HMMWV, commonly called the Humvee. AM General won the initial Army production contract in 1983 and introduced the civilian Hummer in 1992. It later assembled the Hummer H2 for General Motors.1

The company’s other work has included wheelchair-accessible vehicles through Mobility Ventures and contract production of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. In 2023 it won a contract for the updated Joint Light Tactical Vehicle family.12
