About Toyota

Toyota Motor Corporation was established on 28 August 1937 and is headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It developed from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, founded by Sakichi Toyoda; his son Kiichiro led the move into automobile manufacturing.12

Toyota began its US export business with the Crown in 1957 and developed the Corona RT43L specifically for that market in 1965. The Corolla launched in Japan in 1966, becoming one of Toyota’s principal passenger-car families.34

The Prius, launched in 1997, introduced mass-produced hybrid passenger-car technology. Later generations developed Toyota’s combination of gasoline engines, electric motors and battery storage.5

The Toyota Production System is organized around jidoka and Just-in-Time. Jidoka allows production to stop when an abnormality is detected; Just-in-Time matches production and parts supply to what is needed, when it is needed.6
